As a photographer, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is creating lasting memories for others. But as a mom, I find a special joy in capturing my own children, freezing these fleeting moments of their lives. Every smile, every costume, every curious look—it’s all preserved, a visual diary of who they are at each age and stage.
Recently, I had a chance to photograph my little one in an unforgettable way. We dressed her up in a vibrant red dress and a hauntingly beautiful Day of the Dead-inspired face paint, then set off to a moody forest location. This photo, titled Little Red in the Haunted Woods, has quickly become one of my favorites. Not only does it capture her innocence and adventurous spirit, but it also reflects a little bit of magic and mystery that feels so fitting for childhood.

Why Capturing Childhood Moments Matters
As parents, we all know that our kids grow up so quickly—sometimes too quickly! They move from one phase to the next, changing right before our eyes. It can be bittersweet, knowing that each stage won’t last forever. That’s why photographing our children is so important. Through photos, we’re able to preserve these moments of who they were, long after they’ve moved on to new stages of their lives.
Photos have this unique, almost magical quality to them: they stay the same even as the person in them changes. When I look back at pictures of my children from years ago, I see not only how much they’ve grown but also the little hints of who they’re becoming. Photography gives us a chance to look back and remember the quirks, the expressions, and the pure personality that may fade with time.
